MINUTES
DARIEN POLICE COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
APRIL 21, 2010
1. CALL TO ORDER
The 2,205th meeting of the Darien Police Commission was held on the above mentioned date at Police Headquarters. Commissioner Johnson, Commissioner Santarella, Chief Lovello, Captain Pavia, Sgt. Johnson, and Jan Lesko (Commission Recording Secretary) were present. The meeting was called to order at 5:00 PM.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Santarella motioned to approve the minutes of the meeting held on April 7, 2010, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. All were in favor. The time was 5:03 PM.
3. DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY
a. Chief Lovello reported that police recruits Jimenez and Garbera are doing well at the Police Academy.
b. Sgt. Winn is finishing up his second week of supervisory training at Roger Williams University. Sgt. Duignan will be attending in September.
c. The Department is working with the Board of Selectmen in building the Code Red and email notification systems for storms.
d. Chief Lovello reported there was an unusual arrest this week involving a false report to police.
e. The DUI checkpoint scheduled for April 16th in Darien was moved to Stamford due to rain. There were 3 DUI arrests and 7 tickets issued. The next checkpoint is scheduled for late May/early June in Darien.
f. Whole Foods project – road markings will be painted within the next couple of days. A resident of Hale Lane was concerned about the emergency driveway at Whole Foods causing confusion for motorists. Collapsible stanchions are scheduled to be installed on the driveway which will be clearly visible to motorists.
g. The request for funds for emergency radio repairs was tabled by the Board of Finance until their next meeting.
4. OLD BUSINESS
Police Department Building Project
There was no change in status on the Police Department building project.
5. NEW BUSINESS
False Alarm Fund
Captain Pavia requested that funds from the False Alarm Fund be used to obtain six (6) Nextel units for use by the Detective Bureau. These units would allow direct connect with individuals, direct group connect, and would allow for privacy. He requested the sum of up to $1,500 to enter a contract with Nextel and obtain the equipment. Commissioner Johnson motioned to approve a contract with Nextel for six (6) units for the Detective Bureau at a cost of up to $1,500, seconded by Commissioner Santarella. All were in favor. The time was 5:35 PM.
Pear Tree Point Beach/Dogs
Commissioner Santarella requested that the Animal Control Officer increase his patrol at Pear Tree Point Road as residents have frequently been bringing their dogs to the beach despite the fact that no dogs are allowed at Pear Tree Point Beach. Also, Parks and Rec needs to be notified that new signage to this effect is needed.
6. ADJOURNMENT
There being no other business to be considered, Commissioner Santarella motioned to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. All were in favor. The time was 5:40 PM.
