MINUTES
DARIEN POLICE COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
JULY 7, 2010
 
 
1.         CALL TO ORDER
 
The 2,209th meeting of the Darien Police Commission was held on the above mentioned date at Police Headquarters. Commissioner Johnson, Commissioner Harrel, Commissioner Santarella, Chief Lovello, Sgt. Marron, and Jan Lesko (Commission Recording Secretary) were present. The meeting was called to order at 5:00 PM. 
 
2.         APPROVAL OF MINUTES
 
Commissioner Harrel motioned to approve the minutes of the meeting held on June 23, 2010, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. Commissioner Santarella abstained. The time was 5:03 PM. 
 
3.         DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY
 
a.             The Chief’s Quarterly Report for the Department Heads meeting was reviewed.
 
b.            Chief Lovello reported that the Department was extremely busy yesterday due to power outages in different areas of the town.
 
4.         CORRESPONDENCE
 
a.             No correspondence to review.
 
5.         OLD BUSINESS
 
Police Department Building Project
 
Chief Lovello advised that part of the ceiling in the Men’s Locker Room had to be removed as it was in danger of collapsing. The ceiling was rotted and full of mold. It was noted that mechanical units on the roof, which are now exposed, are rusty and pitted.
    
6.         NEW BUSINESS
 
Traffic Issues
 
Noroton Avenue/Ledge Road –Lt. Anderson is currently assessing the feasibility of a left-hand turn arrow on Ledge Road at Noroton Avenue to ease traffic congestion on Ledge Road. He will also be gathering traffic data from traffic counters placed at this location.
 
Post Road/Ledge Road –Chief Lovello advised that there will be an on-site meeting with State DOT on July 22nd. Among some of the concerns is the lack of ‘No Right Turn on Red’ coming out of Ledge Road onto the Post Road and also the extreme length of the pedestrian crosswalk.
 
Holmes Avenue at Holmes Court – Notice has been sent to Dept. of Public Works advising them that the Darien Police Commission approved the installation of ‘No Parking’ signs on Holmes Avenue at Holmes Court. These signs need to be installed as soon as possible.
 
False Alarm Fund
 
A motion was made by Commissioner Johnson to add the False Alarm Fund to the agenda, seconded by Commissioner Santarella. All were in favor. The time was 5:30 PM.
 
Chief Lovello requested funds of up to $3200 from the false alarm account towards the purchase a new file server which would be used in conjunction with the Board of Ed. Said server is needed to support software programs which will be used by the Police Department. Commissioner Harrel motioned to approve the use of up to $3200 to be used towards the purchase of a new file server, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. All were in favor. The time was 5:38 PM.
 
7.         ADJOURNMENT
 
There being no other business to be considered, Commissioner Johnson motioned to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Harrel.   All were in favor. The time was 5:40 PM.
