Currently the Darien Police Department utilizes two forms of speed monitoring devices in an effort to calm traffic speeds and maintain safe driving behaviors on our roads. Motorists often seem to be unaware of the actual speeds they are driving, even through their own neighborhoods
and routine travel routes. Studies show that alerting motorists of their travel speeds, especially in tandem with reminding them of posted speed limits, can be an effective measure in reminding them to reduce their speed. The speed monitoring signs we use are part of an overall strategy to make Darien’s roadways as safe as possible for all motorists and pedestrians.
The Darien Police Department has two twelve inch SPEED SENTRY monitoring devices which are very portable and can be mounted to utility poles in various locations throughout the town. These devices can be specifically set to display and flash speeds of passing traffic, in an effort to increase operator speed awareness and maintain speed limit compliance. These devices will also collect and record data on traffic speeds, volume, dates, and times. This allows the Darien Police Department to formulate strategies to effectively address speeding problems and deploy enforcement at times when violations are most likely to occur.

The Darien Police Department also has one SPEED TRAILER, which is not as portable as the Speed Sentry’s because it is large and has to be towed to locations for deployment. The speed trailer is older and does not have the modern technology that the Speed Sentry’s have and it cannot collect data on passing traffic. The Speed Trailer has distinct reflective Darien Police markings, a bright flashing vehicle speed display screen, and an interchangeable posted speed limit sign. We consistently deploy this Speed Trailer throughout the year, as a supplement to our Speed Sentry’s, and in a continuing effort to educate the motoring public on vehicle speed awareness and safety.
The Speed Sentrys and Speed Trailer are deployed throughout the year by the Traffic Division, based on both requests taken from our residents and to areas of known concern. To request the deployment of a speed monitoring device in your neighborhood contact the Traffic Division at 203-662-5371, or by email at: trafficdivision@darienct.gov .
