The Darien Police Department Training Division is responsible for providing mandatory and supplemental training to department personnel to develop and enhance those skills and decision-making abilities necessary for the successful delivery of services. It provides comprehensive training to ensure our citizens are provided with quality services while being treated with professionalism, dignity and respect. The Training Division is commanded by Sergeant Kane Winn who works closely with department administrators to oversee the recruitment, testing and training of new officers.
In addition to conducting in-service training programs, the Training Sergeant is responsible for researching law enforcement publications, developing lesson plans and instructional materials, scheduling guest lecturers, and providing officers with legal updates.
The Training Division also maintains officers' training records and certification standards and facilitates the Field Training and Evaluation Program for new officers.
All officers receive training and certifications on an array of topics including: Less Lethal Munitions, M-4 Patrol Rifle (patrol carbine), Taser Deployment, E.M.T./M.R.T. Training, Hazardous Materials and Blood borne Pathogens Training, Active Shooter Training, Simunitions Patrol Techniques, and Defensive Tactics to name a few.
All Darien Officers are required to maintain their state certifications of 60 hours of training every 3 years as mandated by the Police Officers Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) State mandated training records must be accurately maintained for each officer and are subject to audit by state certification officials.
