4/21/2016 - Darien Police Arrest Teen In Connection With Fire

For Immediate Release

Darien, CT –On Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at approximately 3:18 P.M. the Darien Police along with the Noroton Heights, Darien and Noroton Fire Departments responded to the Woodland Park Nature Preserve on West Avenue on the report of a brush fire.  Responding Emergency Services encountered a large fire which encompassed approximately five acres of the park.  It took approximately sixty firefighters two hours to extinguish the fire.  Mutual aid was also received from the Glenbrook Fire Department in Stamford.  There were no injuries reported.

A neighbor of the park reported seeing a teen aged male setting the fire, and was able to give the police a description of the male.   At least one witness was able to identify the youth who was seen running from Woodland Park during the same time frame that the fire was reported.

Darien Detectives were able to gather witness statements from area residents who saw a teenage male running in the area of Christie Hill Road toward Hoyt Street, fitting the description of the teen seen leaving Woodland Park.  Based on these statements, evidence was recovered from the teen’s home linking him to the fire.

A Darien Juvenile has been charged with Criminal Mischief for setting that fire at Woodland Park on April 20, 2016. The Youth was issued a Juvenile Summons charging him with Criminal Mischief in the First Degree with a court date in May.
